The eighth-century scholar Sibawayhi is recognized as the first systematic grammarian of Arabic. Michael G. Carter discusses his life and background, his relationship with his teachers, the intellectual context of his grammatical theories, and how his general concept of language shaped his approach to Arabic.

So thorough is Sibawayhi's impressive work — known simply as 'the Book' — that it remains the seminal authority on classical Arabic. By outlining the central ideas of Sibawayhi as well as describing his legacy and achievements, this book provides an accessibly written and non-technical introduction to the whole subject of Arabic linguistics, and to the life and times of the man who founded the discipline

Michael G. Carter is Professor in the Department of East European and Oriental Studies at the University of Oslo. He is the co-author of Modern Written Arabic, a Comprehensive Grammar ( 2003); 'the Sibawayhi Project' (since 1997, on-going definitive hypertext edition of 'the Book' ); co-editor of Studies in the History of Arabic Grammar (1990); and editor of Arab Linguistics (1981).

This book is no. 2 in the 'Makers of Islamic Civilization' series, run by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. Published jointly by Oxford University Press (Delhi) and I.B. Tauris (London), these books are written by specialists for the general reader. They are intended to serve as an introduction to pivotal Islamic thinkers and actors, whose works and legacy make up the pool of cultural experiences and resources on which contemporary Muslims continue to draw.
